Dr. Theodoros B. Grivas, MD, PhD, is an esteemed orthopedic and spinal surgeon. He graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1978) in Central Macedonia, Greece. After completing his training in general surgery, pediatric, and adult orthopedics and traumatology in Greece, he earned his MD diploma. He later obtained a PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

Dr. Grivas gained international experience working at the University Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, and Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital, Mansfield, UK, under the guidance of Mr. J.K. Webb and Professor R.G. Burwell. In Greece, he served at Evangelismos and Thriasio Hospitals in Athens, holding the position of Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Thriasio for five years.

A dedicated member of the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Dr. Grivas is also affiliated with numerous scientific societies. He is a member and Traveling Fellow of both American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and has held leadership roles, including President of International Research Society of Spinal Deformity (IRSSD), International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) (which he co-founded these 2 societies – IRSSD and SOSORT), and the Hellenic (Greek) Spine Society.
Dr. Grivas has led several research projects, particularly in the field of School Scoliosis Screening (SSS), where he implemented a national screening program and established a National Training Center for school-screening examiners (www.schoolscreening.gr), and he was also legislated for this from the Greek State (Φ.Ε.Κ. 4168 Τεύχος Β 30-11-2017). He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored and edited nine books, and contributed to numerous Medline-indexed papers (NCBI publications) and research projects, some funded by national and European sources (ResearchGate profile).

He has also played a key role in scientific publishing, serving as Chief Editor of BMC’s open-access Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities and previously as editor of Scoliosis journal. He is currently a Deputy Editor of Spine Deformity (SRS journal) and contributes to editorial boards of multiple peer-reviewed journals.

During 2019–2020, he was a member of the National Examination Committee for Orthopaedics and Traumatology and, from 2020–2021, served on the Crisis and Selection Council of the Hellenic National Health System, overseeing the appointment of orthopedic surgeons in Piraeus and the Aegean’s 2nd Health District. His department was also invited to provide the Trialect platform Fellowship – Traineeship in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

Dr. Grivas retired on December 31, 2021, from the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department at Tzaneio General Hospital of Piraeus, Greece, where he served as head of the department (Director) for 12 years. Over his 35-year career, he made significant contributions to the Hellenic National Health System as an orthopedic and spinal surgeon.

Currently, he is focused on establishing the Hellenic Scoliosis Foundation while continuing academic writing, delivering lectures on SSS, and implementing SSS programs in various municipalities across Attica, Greece. He has also mentored SSS programs internationally in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel, Egypt, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Poland, and Italy and has served as an external examiner for theses (MDs) in Oslo (Norway), Hong Kong (China), and South Africa.
